The historic museum building was built as a market place in the 1800's and later became the old Shire Hall, before housing the museum from 1964. A fascinating collection of local domestic and mining memorabilia is featured, as well as records of interest to those researching the history of the old shire of Maldon and its early families.
Castlemaine State Festival
Given Castlemaine's passion for the arts, it's hardly surprising that it hosts one of Australia's most highly regarded regional arts festivals. Held every two years, this ten day festival is truly world-class.
The next Festival takes place from 1-10 April 2011. See www.castlemainefestival.com.au or phone 5472-3733.

Chewton Town Hall
The 1860's building now houses thousands of photographs relating to the town's past.
Galleries, Studios, Antiques & Collectables
Fossicking for treasures is a treat throughout the shire. Collectables are still waiting to be retrieved from densely stocked stores and you might discover some up and coming artists. Many cafes in the area feature changing exhibitions, so visitors to the area can often get a taste of local art while they enjoy a cup of excellent coffee.
Maldon also has potters, specialty wood workers, artists, sculptors, wainwright and Victoria’s state champion blacksmith, all working in the area.
